When large pieces of strawberry berries disappear overnight, and the portion eaten appears torn rather than smooth, the likely culprit is slugs. These voracious creatures feed at night and can consume significant portions of berries. Wet weather and straw mulch create favorable conditions for slugs; smaller ones may even hide under the calyxes.
