what to do about tree kankers on tree in our yard at our residence in Arden Hills, MN #874999

Asked June 27, 2024, 3:30 PM EDT

two kankers at bottom of 40+ year old ash tree that is 17 inches in diameter at it's base; one kanker is 9 x 6 inches in size and the other is 3 x 2 inches; do the kankers indicate that the tree need to be removed to prevent it from falling on our house or neighbors house or is there a way to preserve the tree in such a way that we don't need to worry about it falling; or does the existence of these kankers mean the tree is at the end of it's expected life and isn't going to live much longer regardless of what we might do?

Expert Response

I can’t tell you that your tree is safe.

You could upload a photo of the cankers that you are referring to but it sounds like you need to have a professional come out and evaluate the health of your tree. Often, in-person is the only way to do this.

If the cankers are weeping, it is a sign that there is a weakening of the tree.

I would have someone come out to look at it. Be sure to explain to them what your concerns are and what type of tree it is.
