I’m looking for the name of these beetles, their life cycle, and how to control them. They emerge from places where grass doesn’t grow over old tree roots.

That is a Stag Beetle. They help break down woody tissue from dead plants.

Thanks for the info.
What is the best way to deal with grass growing over old tree roots? Extra Nitrogen? I don't mind them helping the roots decompose. The previous owners must have removed quite a few trees.

The best way is to pull the grass and cover the area with mulch. This will suppress the grass, hold moisture for the tree, prevent tree and grass from competing for nutrients and prevent accidental injury to the tree roots when mowing or trimming.
