Keep or remove Fungus? #874978

Asked June 27, 2024, 2:05 PM EDT

We have a large bed of black-eyed susans and a few have a fungus growth - there could be the remains of a tree stump below that area, which I understand may bring forth funguses. Just wondering whether to remove or leave.

Expert Response

This appears to be a Ganoderma-type fungus, which are one of several mushroom types associated with the decay of dead or dying trees. Since you think that there may be old stump in that area, that would support the presence of the mushroom. The fungus producing the mushrooms won't hurt live perennials, and any mushrooms it produces can be left alone to disintegrate at their own pace.
