Pryeria sinica eradication #874954

Asked June 27, 2024, 12:04 PM EDT

My 15 y.o. nephew has a small vegetable garden. Today he asked me about an insect that was on a cucumber plant. I think it is pryeria sinica. Can you please confirm that I.d? Does it eat vegetable plants? If so, can you give any information on how to eradicate it? Thank you very much!

Expert Response

This is a type of clearwing moth in the genus Hemaris. We have three species in this genus here in Maryland. Yours appears to resemble the snowberry clearwing, but it would take a close look at the wing pattern to determine the exact difference among the three species.

These are not a vegetable garden pest, they are not harmful to people, and there is nothing you need to do about them. They are common insects here. If you're curious, it is interesting to watch them fly about as they feed on the nectar of different flowers. Their flight pattern resembles that of hummingbirds.
