safety of good from the garden after raccoon feces discovered #874943

Asked June 27, 2024, 11:14 AM EDT

Is it safe to eat the vegetables from my garden after finding raccoon feces in the garden space? I have read that the animal feces can contaminate the soil. I am particularly concerned about the potatoes. Additionally, I typically give my abundance of zucchini to my children, one of whom is pregnant. Are the vegetables safe for her? Thank you in advance for your wisdom.

I think this article I am linking you to below answers a lot of your questions.  Prevention is best, through guidance in this article.  Following the advice "when in doubt, throw it out" is a good rule.  Many of the pathogens can be killed through cooking, so if you have concerns, cooking the produce for your daughter that is pregnant will provide a layer of protection.  Don't stop eating produce, but take measures to play it safe.
