Propagating Native Columbine #874924

Asked June 27, 2024, 9:47 AM EDT

I just collected an ounce or two of native columbine seeds. I've read about stratifying the seeds but unclear about the timing of that. Please clarify when I should stratify, how I should store the seeds until then and any other details to increase my success. I've harvested the seed in St. Paul but want to propagate in NE MN. Thanks, Steve

Expert Response

Hi Steve,

Store the seeds in paper envelopes and put them in a dark cool place. As for stratification, the easiest thing to do would be to scatter them in the area where you want them to grow in the fall for spring germination. Winter will provide the cold they need.

If you want to stratify them yourself, this page should answer your questions.

Good luck.
