Little holes in hosta and fern leaf #874904

Asked June 27, 2024, 3:13 AM EDT

How do I control this leaf damage? Jut noticed on Monday when mowing lawn. Hundreds of ferns and dozens of hastas affected. Did not seem noticeably different on Wednesday. Plants are primarily in shaded area

Expert Response

It could be slug damage on the hostas but the holes are a little too small.  There are many insects who make small holes including many different beetles.  To check for possible slugs, put down a board under your hostas and check it in the morning to see if there are slugs on the ground side.  The tiny little damage on the ferns could also be caused by any thing. It is not major.  Otherwise, just check the undersides of leaves for any insects and/or eggs.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/slugs
