Is it too late? #874868

Asked June 26, 2024, 7:13 PM EDT

I received the results on the soil in my cabin front garden area. It recommends fertilizer, organic material and potash, all to be placed in the spring. Is it too late to apply now or should I wait until next spring?

Expert Response

Hello Lynne,
It would help if we can review the actual test result. Can you provide the 6 character code? I can look it up with that info.
If not, please let me know what the garden is for- flowers, vegetables?
Laura,
Thank you for such a prompt response. Of course, the code to my result is: 3A9T75
I hope this helps.

Lynne

Hi Lynne,
Thank you for the test result code.
Since this is for your flowers and perennials, and we are about halfway through the growing season, apply 1/2 of the suggested fertilizer. You may also apply 1/2  of the recommended additional potassium fertilizer ( 0-0-60). Carefully work them in lightly around any existing plants and rinse off the leaves if fertilizer gets on them.
Next spring you can follow the directions for the full amount, and also the following spring. Soil test results are good for at least three seasons.
Follow the recommendations for increasing your organic matter as well. It is not too late to follow the organic matter recommendations right now.
Please remember to read and follow the application directions and precautions on any product you use, such as watering product into the soil if required.
Regards,
Laura S.
Thank you so much!  In our family I was not the gardner, but my dad and sister have died and my mom is in memory care, leaving me to care for the cabin gardens.  I am learning by fire, but so thankful for the MSU extension and you!

Thanks again,
Lynne
