Groundcover near raspberries? #874865

Asked June 26, 2024, 6:37 PM EDT

Hi, I have a 30 foot row of mostly raspberries and a couple marionberries. There's a 2-ft space between them and the fence that gets part sun. I'd like to plant something in that space to help control weeds and add some greenery, but I don't want it to become invasive or compete too much for nutrients with the berries. Any suggestions? I'd prefer OR (or maybe CA or WA) natives, but am open to other options. Thank you!

Expert Response

Mulching your caneberries is recommended rather than groundcover plantings. You want nutrients and water available to your berry plants, and need to preserve the good soil drainage. See EC 1306 about growing raspberries in a home garden, especially the hill or raised bed, nutrient, and mulching sections.
