Large oak and black walnut trees dying graduallyWe #874826

Asked June 26, 2024, 2:52 PM EDT

We had about 15-20 large oak and black walnut trees on a 250-300 foot fence line at the back of our property. Gradually they seem to be dying out- like maybe 2-3 trees a year. We are wondering if this is natural or is something causing this and is there something we can do to change this process.

Hello Clark
There are many reasons trees decline and die. Flooding, drought, insects,  disease, and storm damage, rots; all these stress trees not just when the event occurs but, for years afterwards.   Diseases and insects are often specific to a tree species, so there are different issues on oaks vs. walnuts.

An on site evaluation is in order to diagnose what is going on. Hire a certified arborist, a professional who has been trained and passed certification testing, to come on site and evaluate the stand. He/she can provide a health care plan going forward, and recommend any treatments needed.
