Dead Bees #874820

Asked June 26, 2024, 2:34 PM EDT

Sir: The hive seems to be very busy. However, every morning I find dozens of bees on the patio. Some are on their back, others are still and some a moving but not flying. The hive is about six months old. The guy that removes bees brought me a lot of them. Can I send a dead bee to someone for examination? Thank you for reading this. Carl S

Expert Response

Hello,

It is normal for honey bees to die outside of the hive. If the patio is under, adjacent to, or close to the hive entrance, you would expect to find dead honey bees on the patio. Honey bee colonies should be regularly inspected and managed to look for other health issues such as varroa mites, disease, nutritional deficiency, queen issues, pesticide exposure, and other issues.

The Ask Extension form at https://pollinators.msu.edu/questions/index.aspx is for Michigan residents. I see that you are from California, so it's best to reach out to local resources and experts. I suggest joining a local beekeeping club if you haven't done so already. You can also try contacting your local Cooperative Extension office for assistance. A good way to find your local office is to go to https://extension.org/search/ and enter your county name along with your state name. You might also use your favorite search engine and enter "cooperative extension" along with your county name.
