Research showed that feeding grain to calves significantly impacts the development of the rumen papillae. The increase in papillae development mainly increases the absorption surface for acid and other fermentation products to be absorbed in the rumen wall. However is not the only factor that impacts rumen development. Forage consumption still promotes the muscular development of the rumen, rumination, and saliva production. These are also important aspects of rumen development.
