Why are Shrubs not growing? #874734

Asked June 26, 2024, 12:50 AM EDT

I planted 3 Standing Ovation serviceberry shrubs in 2020 and they haven’t grown 1ft! They are supposed to get up to 15ft tall/4-5ft wide. The irony that I kept them protected from rabbits — and all the other shrubs that got eaten by rabbits in my yard 2 winters ago grew 4-5’ the next summer. I feel like I know how to plant trees(cut roots, etc) … but should I dig them up and try to loosen roots? (Would they have died if it was a root issue?) Move them? They are getting 5-6 hours of afternoon sun now (a little less in fall as sun drops lower in sky my neighbors house shades them). They do have to compete probably with other trees. Pics from this week looks even smaller than when they were planted in 2020. I am so frustrated- they were supposed to be helping with privacy. Thanks for any help.

Expert Response

I believe the problem is the soil where they are planted.  Is it clay or compressed?  If so, the roots cannot spread and it is just barely hanging in there.  Dig them up, carefully, and check the root systems.  They should be white and firm.  If not, remove what is damaged.  Make sure the planting hole is the right depth and the soil loosened around the side, and the base.  You can add some compost and mix it in with your native soil.  Good luck. https://www.arborvalleynursery.com/plants/standing-ovation-serviceberry
