Hello Denise,
The damage you see is consistent with moles. Michigan is home to two types of moles, the common European mole and the star-nosed mole. The European mole is the culprit when you see the traditional mole tunnels on the surface.
The star nosed mole likes to be near water and digs deeper and leaves cone-shaped dirt piles for air vents. From the photo, I would suspect a star-nosed mole.
Poisoning and repellents are not terribly effective treatment methods. The most effective method for treatment is trapping.
