Aster yellows or coneflower rosette mite? #874709

Asked June 25, 2024, 8:48 PM EDT

Hello, I think my coneflowers have aster yellows or coneflower rosette mites, and I'd greatly welcome your opinion. The buds aren't maturing normally. The more mature buds either have no petals or few petals. They also seem to be taking an outsized amount of time to mature. The foliage is healthy with no yellowing. The plant isn't stunted; it's very tall. I read all the information I could find on various extension websites and understand it can be hard to tell, but I'd appreciate a more practiced eye! Thank you for your assistance.

Hello!

Thank you for writing. Based on your description and photos, it appears that it is not rosette mites.  Unfortunately, if it is, in fact, aster yellows, it would mean that you would have to remove the infected plants.  Before you do that, and to definitely identify the issue I would recommend taking a sample (see below for instructions) to a reputable nursery in your area or to your local Extension Office (see below for a link to find your local office).
