Sparse leaves on crabapple tree #874702

Asked June 25, 2024, 7:53 PM EDT

Hello. This crabapple tree doesn't have many leaves this year. Some of the leaves have discoloration. It seemed more healthy last year. What can I do to help my tree?

Expert Response

This tree appears to have apple scab.  See the following website for how to manage it.
https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/apple-scab

For other possible problems see the following:  https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/crabapple/
Some general things to do:
1. Pull the mulch back 6-8 inches so it is not touching the tree trunk. Mulch touching tree trunks can dehydrate trees and provide a place for rodents and disease.
2. Water the tree well when there is no rain.
