What is this on my camellia? #874696

Asked June 25, 2024, 7:07 PM EDT

Attached photo is of my fall blooming camellia. Can you tell me what is the substance that is growing on the branch. Is it hurting the plant? What do I need to do?

Expert Response

This is lichen, and it is a harmless organism that does not need removal. If the Camellia appears to be struggling or showing symptoms of decline, feel free to send us photos of the symptoms for assessment, since in that case something unrelated to the lichen might be going on.
