grasshoppers #874689

Asked June 25, 2024, 6:21 PM EDT

I have hundreds of tiny grasshoppers invading my garden, especially some miniature roses but other plants are affected too.  I've tried Garden Safe insecticidal soap but the numbers of grasshoppers seems to be too great to have any effect. Suggestions?

Larimer County Colorado

Expert Response

Hi Mary,

Unfortunately, it appears it's going to be a heavy grasshopper year in some parts of Larimer County. Since they are so mobile, they are very difficult to control. Baits, like EcoBran, might help, but there are so many food options for them to eat in the landscape, that they may not eat the baits.

Your best efforts are to net/protect your most desirable plants. And accept that damage to plants is inevitable.

Plants may look very bad at the end of the growing season, but healthy plants will recover next year.
