Mosquito netting to prevent dengue #874675

HI!
I had a couple of gutter tubes to draw water from the downspouts and into the yard. I had read that one should put netting over those openings to prevent mosquitoes from breeding there. I wonder what kind of netting is most effective. Also, since I have very small surfaces that need it, I hope that there is netting in small amounts that would work instead of buying a huge roll.
Also, would mosquito dunks work? I have them for my rain barrels.
Thanks for your advice, D

Mosquito dunks use a naturally-occurring bacteria species that produces toxins that only harm fly larvae, which includes mosquitoes. They might not be practical to use in a water source that keeps getting flushed-out when it rains, but in more standing water sources (like rain barrels) they can be useful to prevent larvae from occupying them.
Any netting that blocks a mosquito-sized insect should work, including insect mesh netting sold to cover vegetable crops and window screening mesh sold in rolls at a hardware store. Even old pantyhose will work, though all of these would need to be secured in a way that doesn't fall off easily (rubber bands might break after a few weeks or months). We don't collect information on brands available so don't have advice about where to find small or custom-sized pieces, though all of these materials should be fairly easy to cut.
