Caterpillar ID please #874665

Asked June 25, 2024, 3:53 PM EDT

Can you ID this insect on my butterfly weed. Thx

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

It's a moth caterpillar, and possibly one of the several species in the family called Prominents, but we can't determine from the photo which particular species it is. It is probably not consuming the Milkweed, and may have fallen there (or was dropped by a bird or wasp, or crawled) if there is a nearby oak, maple, or other shade tree, which are the host plants for many species in that family.

Thanks. It’s gone now, and no damage to milkweed. Thx
