Hi Joe, thanks for the question.
Choosing a shade tree involves many factors. Consider why you want a shade tree such as aesthetics, privacy, shade and cooling properties. You want to choose a tree that fits the site. Assess the site where the tree will be planted, taking into account the space available for growth, soil type, and drainage. Soil properties can limit what will thrive on your site. A soil test (Home | MSU Soil Test) can help. Don't forget about power lines, buried cables, etc. The mature size of the tree should match the scale of the space, with medium-sized trees typically reaching heights between 30 to 60 feet. Foliage density is another factor, as it affects the level of shade provided. Seasonal changes should also be considered, especially for deciduous trees that can shade south-facing windows in the summer and let sunlight in during the winter. It’s wise to avoid trees prone to storm damage, pests, or excessive seed or fruit production. Starting with a high-quality tree, preferably 5 to 8 feet tall, can ensure better establishment, especially for species that are difficult to transplant. Ultimately, choosing a tree is also a personal preference. Check out the following links for ideas:
