i love my little Japanese maple. This winter was really hard on it. Seems half is leafless ans the part with leaves is pretty slim. Can it be saved?

There isn’t anything to do other than wait and see how or if it recovers. Don’t fertilize a stressed tree, but do take care of it with appropriate watering.
