Weeping white spruce brown needles #874617

Asked June 25, 2024, 11:38 AM EDT

We have two weeping white spruce. The more mature one has some brown needles, but it seems to have had that over several seasons. A smaller and younger weeping white spruce seems to be more in trouble. We are thinking it’s got a fungus. And we’ve treated it with an antifungal. I believe it’s sulfur. We wanted to get your opinion on what we should be doing and if we’re on track.

Expert Response

It looks to me to be winter injury.  Note that the lowest branches are still green.  They probably had snow cover.  Also new growth is green as is the tip.  The discolored needles will not turn green again but new growth should be okay.  Give your tree TLC this year and protect it next fall from winter injury.  https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/protecting-trees-and-shrubs-winter
