When to prune stone fruit trees #874616

Asked June 25, 2024, 11:37 AM EDT

I am in Benton County. I have a Lapins cherry, a Montmorency cherry, and an Italian prune plum tree - all under 10 years old. When do I prune these trees? I understand they are vulnerable to disease if I prune them at the wrong time.

Thank you for your question to "Ask Extension".  Prune the Italian plum tree when all danger from fall or early winter freeze has passed, but before full bloom in spring. Sweet and sour cherry trees may be pruned in August when there’s less danger of bacterial infection.  Diseased and dead wood may be pruned out at anytime.
I hope that you find this information useful and as always Happy Gardening.
