Holes in leaves of medium blueish Hosta plant #874611

Asked June 25, 2024, 11:26 AM EDT

Holes have appeared on the leaves of blueish Hosta plant leaves that we planted around 5/20/2024. Also planted variegated first frost hostas plants at the same time in same beds. Plants purchased from Home Depot. Variegated hostas do not have holes in leaves. Since the heat wave and dry weather we have been watering daily. Do the blue hosta have an infestation? Infection? Water problems?

Expert Response

Your hostas look good overall, and we wouldn't be concerned with the minor damage you are seeing. Holes can be caused by slugs, snails, and leaf-spotting diseases. (And deer love to eat all the leaves).
Keeping plants well watered, especially newly planted ones, is important, especially as we are experiencing more days of high heat and lack of rain. Hopefully, they are planted in areas with a good amount of shade as they prefer as well.
