Asked June 25, 2024, 11:04 AM EDT

Hello, I was wondering what I can do to treat my raspberries for Japanese beetles and whiteflies that is bee safe?

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

You can handpick adult Japanese beetles in the morning when they are less active. For whiteflies, a strong stream of water can knock them off the underside of leaves.

You can use floating row covers to exclude adult Japanese beetles from feeding on your raspberry plants. Install the covers as soon as flower buds appear and remove them during bloom for pollination to occur.

You can place yellow sticky traps around your plants to trap adult whiteflies.

You can use beneficial nematodes that will kill Japanese beetle grubs in the soil.

You can purchase ladybugs or lacewings they are predators of whiteflies.

You can apply insecticidal soap according to the label. It kills adult whiteflies on contact and is relatively safe for bees and other beneficial insects.

You can try neem oil, a natural insecticide that can be effective against both Japanese beetles and whiteflies. Neem oil is relatively safe for bees if used according to the label directions, but it can be somewhat repellent. Avoid spraying during the day when bees are most active.

Where do I purchase (or who is a reputable supplier) for ladybugs or lacewings?
