Red Mulberry Trees in Delaware? #874540

Asked June 24, 2024, 9:28 PM EDT

I'm very interested in growing a couple (male+female) Red Mulberry trees on my property in Newark Delaware. I know that they're native to Delaware but are becoming increasingly rare because they hybridize with the invasive white mulberry tree (which is everywhere, including my own neighborhood). Is there any way I could get cuttings or seedlings for confirmed male and female red mulberry trees so I can help propagate the native plant?

Good Morning and thank you for contacting Ask Extension.
Yes, you are correct, Morus rubra (Red Mulberry) is native to Delaware.  They are, however, Monoecious (A plant or plant species producing male and female reproductive structures on the same plant but on separate flowers.)
I am unable to direct you to a source for cuttings or seedlings of the tree but you could check with local nurseries to see if they have the tree in stock or if they can order it for you.  There are also several very reliable sources online for ordering trees including Morus rubra.
Be careful where you plant the tree(s) though.  The fruit can be messy and the birds (and their droppings,) even messier!
Good luck and Happy Growing!
