Honeycrisp Apple tree issue #874429

Asked June 24, 2024, 12:45 PM EDT

My daughter lives in the Longfellow area of Minneapolis and has a honeycrisp apple tree which is a few years old. This summer the leaves have been turning brown - see attached photos. Please advise as to what can be done to remedy this. Thank you!

Expert Response

It looks like apple scab which has been very wide spread this year due to the wet weather.  The apples may or may not show signs of infection and are safe to eat when peeled.  However, if it is only one or two branches and no signs of blotches on other leaves, it could be damage to those branches instead.  It is too late to treat for apple scab as fungicides must be applied at leaf green tip stage.  It is extremely important to clean up leaves as they fall and remove or mulch them this fall.  Make a note to self to spray very early next spring.  https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/apple-scab
