I have had several climbing hydrangeas against the brick wall of our house for a number of years. No more than 10? All looked very healthy last season. All except one continue to look healthy. One never came back this season.
Bartlett sent some samples to their lab. I've included their reports. I've done a little research about sudden death of climbing hydrangeas and the only thing that makes sense to me is a possible lack of water over the winter? This particular hydrangea is the only one that had limited access to water because it is surrounded by a composite patio except for a small cutout for soil.
Here's my plan right now.
We will remove the entire plant, roots and all.
I will definitely get a soil test.
I will keep an eye on all the hydrangeas and check out anything that looks worrisome.
Based on the soil test we will replace or amend the soil where the plant died.
We hope to plant another climbing hydrangea in the same spot.
We'll be more careful about making sure the plant gets enough water.
Does this plan sound like the best course?
