Dying crabapple tree #874413

Asked June 24, 2024, 11:42 AM EDT

My 25 year-old crabapple appears to be dying - little new growth and the apples are small and shriveled. It had a full blossoming in the spring. A few years ago a knowledgeable tree trimmer found fire blight on another tree in the yard. When is the best time to remove the tree? Can another crabapple be planted in the same spot? Is there a different tree that you would recommend? A crabapple has been a good choice as it occupies a space between a leach bed and is 8-10 feet from the house. It’s height has been an advantage as it blocks a second story window. I am in Elmore, which straddles the Ottawa. Sandusky Clunties line. Thank you.

Expert Response

Good afternoon,

Unfortunately, your crabapple may have fireblight but crabs can also contract apple scab which leads to fruit drop and defoliation. The tree can be removed now if you wish or end of the season if you don't want to deal with leaves.

Small possible small replacement trees could include:

Kousa dogwood https://bygl.osu.edu/node/1989

Japanes Tree Lilac https://bygl.osu.edu/node/777

Seven Sun Flower https://bygl.osu.edu/node/1407

Feel free to contact me wth more questions.
