Spotted lantern fly #874404

Asked June 24, 2024, 10:54 AM EDT

I think I spotted a spotted lantern fly. I took a picture prior to smashing it. Then I took another one.

Expert Response

This is not a Spotted Lanternfly, which has a different wing and body color pattern, and which is not in the adult (winged) life stage yet. This is a Giant Leopard Moth, a native insect that is in the same moth family as the well-known Woolly Bear caterpillar. You can compare more photos of each insect on the linked pages.
