How to handle a very small crab apple tree started from a small branch. #874395
Asked June 24, 2024, 10:29 AM EDT
I trimmed our crab apple tree earlier this spring and a stuck a few small branches into some soil and one of the has begun sprouting leaves. I'd like to keep it growing and healthy until it can be planted in another location. A few of the leaves are turning a little yellow so I'm thinking it may need some help but I'm not sure how to do that.. It's about 4 inches over all. Any help is much appreciated.

Good morning!
How exciting it is sending off new growth! I would suggest fertilizing it.
Here is a fact sheet on fertilization - what the different elements in fertilizer does and some common questions in regards to fertilizing.
Fertilizers have three numbers on them. The first represents nitrogen, second phosphorus and the third potassium. I would suggest a mild fertilizer. Either something that has the same number for all three or a little higher nitrogen (the first number). This fact sheet has more visuals on explaining the ratio of nutrients in the bag of fertilizer.
Thanks so much!
