Ant swarming #874362

Asked June 24, 2024, 12:31 AM EDT

I've noticed multiple.times especially in the summer months what appears like entire colonies of ants swarming by cracks in the sidewalk. Are they moving homes? The ants are small black ants but I believe I've noticed a few diff species doing it.. location Troutdale, OR. Months April-July

Multnomah County Oregon

Expert Response

Hi John- Thanks for your question and picture of the swarming ants. I can see some of them carrying white eggs so I believe they may be moving to a new site or at least there is some reason they need to get the eggs out of their old nest. If you see them swarming with wings, usually earlier in the season, they are getting ready for a mating flight to make a new queen and move to a new area.

Good observations!
