Flopping Cascara Tree #874323

Asked June 23, 2024, 5:49 PM EDT

We have a cascara tree that was planted a few years ago. It is now around 15 feet tall and the top 4 feet have begun to flop in a 45 degree angle northward. Is this a water issue? It doesn’t look particularly top-heavy, but we could try removing some branches near the flopping part. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi Zuriel and thanks for your question and picture of your bending cascara tree. This could be due to water issues or ice from the winter or some other stress causing the top to be weak. I would recommend calling an ISA certified arborist as the tree may need to be straightened and they will have a better idea of why this happened from examining the site. The following link will get you help and we usually recommend getting several opinions before you make a decision.

Please contact someone before you do any pruning, as the tree looks leggy already and pruning or topping the tree would not be a good idea.
