Thank you for your question, Virginia. We are reluctant to try to diagnose problem without photos, but the most common reason for these symptoms is a fungus described here: https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/rose-rosa-spp-hybrids-black-spot
It is too late to do anything this year, but removing the plant material and applying a fungicide in early spring may help next year. The article has full instructions. Good luck!
