Crab apple trees #874316

Asked June 23, 2024, 4:20 PM EDT

What’s up with so many ornamental crab apple trees this year? I’ve seen so many that look almost like they’re dying…but not quite. (Lots of dried leaves but a few still green on the branches.) Our son’s blossomed as usual in the spring but then started to look bad. What’s up?

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

Many leaves browned and dropped off, but quite a few branches also have a few green leaves still on them.

Without a closeup of leaves and branches we are not able to assess the issues.  We have been seeing a lot of crabapple leaf issues.  Trees can lose up to 50% of leaves and still grow new ones this early in the summer.  Compare what you are seeing with the following websites. Send closeups if none of these possibilities compare with your tree.
