This tree has never had any cherries on it for the 8 years we have lived here. We cut down the peach tree right by it last year and now this tree is bearing cherries, I think. I would like to know if these are edible.

Expert Response
Hi- this appears to be a cherry tree, more likely a tart cherry than a sweet cherry.
The bark of mature native black cherry trees is rough, reddish-brown, and plate-like, and the mature fruits are purple-black.
Fruit production is greatly reduced when fruiting cherry trees are shaded. Removing the peach may have opened the cherry tree to more sunlight.
