Can I trim the new growth my Baton Rouge Dogwood now? #874287

Asked June 23, 2024, 12:55 PM EDT

It has 3 feet of new tall shoots. Would this harm the plant it I trimmed that off?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

The correct time to prune dogwood is in late winter/early spring.  This timing reduces disease and encourages quick healing of cuts due to early spring plant hormones and lack of insects.  That said you can prune them at other times but you will risk possible disease and insect damage.
