Hello, Is the first photo attached a pic of prunella? I ask because I purchased two prunella plants from the Native Plant Sale. And now that they are growing I wonder if we already have the plant in our yard (as pictured).
Also, do you recognize the plant in the second pic? Thank you.

Thank you Mary for your question to "Ask Extension". Without a picture of the flower and/or seeds it is difficult to identify the plant in the first photo. It does have some of the characteristics of Prunella vulgaris. When it does flower they should be purple with individual two-lobed flowers 10 to 15mm long. The upper lip is a helmet-like cowl, while the lower lip is divided into three lobes, the central lobe longer than the two side lobes. It could also be from the nightshade family or bindweed. The plant in the second photo is common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris). It is a weed that will have yellow flowers and go to seed rapidly. Hand pulling is a very effective way of control if done when the plants are small. I hope that you find this information useful and as always Happy Gardening.
