unwanted poplar growth #874242

After the August storm 2023, the poplar tree was removed but unfortunately all the seedlings have cropped up all over the yard. Have mowed but they return, how can we get rid of this? Don't think that a weed killer will work because it's not a weed?
Thank you

Unfortunately we can see this in some tree species if the trunk of the original tree is not treated at the time of removal.
Repeated mowing will eventually work as the root system from the original tree is depleted.
Herbicides can kill any plant if you choose the right one. In this case I would suggest one that targets tough to control species (including poison ivy). You will want to look for the active ingredient triclopyr. An example product is Ortho Weed B Gon Chickweed, Clover & Oxalis Killer. There are other products with triclopyr in them, just make sure they are labeled for use in the lawn. It is important to always read and follow all labeled instructions for maximum efficacy and personal and environmental safety.
Treatment will not prevent more sprouts from coming up, but that should decrease over time.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
