Cottonwood bark has split substantially #874214

Asked June 22, 2024, 5:02 PM EDT

My cottonwood has been around since before 1992. Recently it has developed a long split of the bark from the base to as far up as I can see. I notice it after finding chunks of bark on the lawn and around the tree. Attached are the pics. What remedy do you suggest to keep the tree healthy for a long time? What is the probability of the tree falling at a major storm? I would like to save it if possible, as it provides a lot of shade and ambience.

Expert Response

Hello

You are right to be concerned because the tree is so close to buildings and near where people frequently walk, etc.

The crack appears to be a lightning strike..

Tree risk assessment is a multiple factor, complex process that needs a trained professional arborist in “tree risk assessment”.

These certified professionals have been specially educated and passed certification tests.

They will look at health of the tree, tree species, etc, and look for signs of insects and disease in the crown, roots and bark.

The International Society of Arboriculture has a website where you can search for arborists in your area by zip code. Be sure to select one who lists “Tree Risk Assessment” in his/her qualifications.

Here are a couple references describing tree risk assessment in detail—-

Laura:

Thank you for a super fast response!!

You have helped identify the source of the problem, as thought it might be decay.

I will go per your recommendation and seek out an arborist good at tree risk assessment.
