Apple espalier #874209
Asked June 22, 2024, 4:08 PM EDT
Please refer to 0141160 for my previous issues with this espalier. On 6/19/2024, my espalier looked fine and I sprayed it with Bonide Fruit Tree & Plant Guard as per the VA Tech schedule. Today (6/22/2024) one apple is blemished and 2 apples have open areas. There is premature dropping of 2 apples with the open areas. Note that the temperatures have been in the high 90's (heat dome). I checked the remaining approx 20 apples and they are fine.

Expert Response
The injuries pictured in the first two photos are hard to diagnose, but look minor and not concerning. They might be from bird pecking (birds have been damaging some orchard peach crops recently, for example, giving one fruit a peck or two and then moving onto another fruit). The red specks on the apple in the third photo might be from San Jose Scale, but they are so minor that intervention is not necessary.
