Expert Response

Hi Cathy,

Can you send me photos? Or if it's easier, the Master Gardeners are in the office tomorrow (Tuesday, June 25) from 10am-1pm at the Larimer County Extension Office, 1525 Blue Spruce Drive in Fort Collins. You can bring a sample for them to look at and identify.

Thanks!

Hi Cathy,

This looks like juniper spittlebug (a pest of both juniper and arborvitae) and it can be found on trees and shrubs in wetter years.

They usually don't cause any damage or overall harm to the shrubs and feed on plant sap. If you want to try to control them, just hit them with a strong jet of water from your hose. No insecticides are needed.
