Asked June 22, 2024, 12:38 PM EDT

My brambling roses have yellow fungus looking stuff on the stems and leaves. I am wondering if it is rust. It has rained a lot this year. the roses have been spreading for 15 years and i have never had this before.

Expert Response

Good Morning Andrea,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

I believe your rose is a rugosa rose. It is in the Rosaceae family.  I agree the problem looks like rust. With all the rain we are having in June, more fungal diseases are showing up.

Please click on the following link about various rust diseases: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rust-flower-garden

This information states:

  • Pinch off rust infected leaves and remove them from the garden. Do not remove more than 1/3 of the plant’s foliage at any one time.

If you scroll down, there is more details about the disease. Hopefully the weather will turn and we'll dry out a little!

Happy Gardening!
