Wasp mimic ID #874126

Asked June 21, 2024, 5:43 PM EDT

Hi! I am an avid birder and outdoorsy person in the the twin cities. I recently found an insect that I believe to be a wasp beetle, but my search results show that they are only in Europe, not the US. I was hoping to get a positive ID, and if it is a European wasp beetle, make that report in case you have any sort of records for stray insects (the birding community does for birds, so I thought y'all might as well). Thanks!

Expert Response

Good Morning Zaila,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

I used my insect app on your photo. The app is "Picture This" for insects and I believe it is a free app. Excellent photo, by the way!

My app indicated it is a red-headed ash borer: https://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=red+headed+ash+borer&search=Search

Here is a link from bugguide about the insect. https://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=red+headed+ash+borer&search=Search

There is an app you can use to help identify things and also report unusual sightings called INaturalist. It is free. The Extension and Forestry staff use that app to look for reports.

Good Luck!
