Apple Tree Problem #874073

Asked June 21, 2024, 12:53 PM EDT

I’m worried about my apple tree. It blossomed as usual with beautiful white flowers this Spring and then the leaves started falling and they continue to fall every day. I would appreciate any information/help you could give me. Is it diseased, and if so what I can do? I’m a widow and a senior citizen and live in a townhouse and the association can’t help me as the tree is on my land. I have attached a few pictures: one of May 7, 2024 and a picture taken June 20, 2024 of one of the leaves that are falling every day. Thank you so very much for your help!

Expert Response

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for reaching out! I am sorry to read about your apple tree; it did look beautiful this spring.

The best option would be to have a certified arborist come out and look at your tree. They will be able to diagnose any diseases, while also evaluating for any environmental issues. Here is a link to find a professional: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional

At first glance, it looks like your tree may have apple scab. It's difficult to tell exactly from the photos, so again, the arborist would be best for an in-person diagnosis. Apple scab is the most common disease on crabapple trees in Minnesota. Symptoms include leaf loss and dark brown to black spots on the leaves, such as you are experiencing. This is a helpful UMN Extension article on apple scab: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/apple-scab

There is a great section on "how to manage apple scab", which includes tips such as cleaning up the leaves in the fall and pruning the tree if necessary.

I really hope this helps!

Hello helpful U of M Extension!

Thank you for your rapid response and helpful information.  I will contact an arborist from the list you sent.  I feel sad about my apple tree because my husband passed away seven years ago and he planted it twenty years ago.  I will do whatever it takes to get it back to good health.  I have a sentimental attachment to this beautiful tree.

Thank you again

Sincerely,

Shirley Miller
