Is this a weed? #874066

Asked June 21, 2024, 12:26 PM EDT

Hello. See pix of what looks to be weeds in my sunny, front lawn. Quite a few of them. What is it and how can I get rid of them? Thank you.

Expert Response

Those are baby oak tree seedlings. Oaks are great native trees and those would be easy to transplant to use elsewhere if desired.
You can either pull them or continue to mow as normal and they will die back, if not immediately, soon.

There is a large old pin oak in the front yard. So these all came from the acorns that dropped from it? This is the first year I’ve seen them sprout in the yard like this. There are probably 100 of them. Interesting.

That is interesting.
Did you notice if it was a heavy mast/crop year for acorns or maybe you have more wildlife (squirrels, chipmunks etc.) active in the yard?
Just a thought.
Have a good weekend.
I think it was a bumper acorn crop last year. Many squirrel holes too.

Thanks for your quick response and advice. Take care.
