Solarizariom duration? #874062

Asked June 21, 2024, 12:08 PM EDT

Hi - Using your sharp insight about clear plastic, we covered a 50’ x 50’ field of overgrown weeds in April. We’re located an hour north of NYC and this year had a mild spring. Now, however, we’re are definitely seeing a lot of brown in what did grow underneath. I’m thinking to just leave it in place through the fall, winter, and next spring - or even into the summer, to absolutely kill everything (this field was completely overrun and neglected for a decade). Can you please confirm my plan, or offer me further insight or advice? I appreciate your time and expertise. Thanks, Eliot

Expert Response

Hi Eliot,

Keeping the plastic on site that long may be overkill. Online research indicates that most seeds and plants die after six to eight weeks. But that depends on sunlight and temperatures.

Unless the plastic is covering the roots of desirable plants like trees, I don't know why you couldn't leave the plastic down as long as you want. You should should watch it for tearing, though.
