Grasshopper infestation #874054

Asked June 21, 2024, 11:14 AM EDT

Hi!  We have a small acreage hobby farm in Berthoud, CO. The past few years we have had grasshoppers during the summertime, but this year we are infested. We have a 1 acre pasture and 2000 sqft garden that they are completely eating. (See picture attached). We don't use any pesticides on our property.  Any recommendations for mitigating? We have used neem oil in a sprayer with some Dr. Bronners regularly and it doesn't seem to phase them. They have eaten most, if not all, our vegetable garden. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Lindsey,

The best thing to do at this point is protect desirable crops and plants with row covers or netting. Neem will only be effective on the youngest grasshoppers (the very early nymph stage).

CSU Extension does have a fact sheet on grasshoppers - note that NoLo is not available (the factory burned down a few years ago and has not returned): https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/grasshopper-control-in-gardens-small-acreages-5-536/
